Although the film is inspired by a real fact, Gus Van Sant didn't want to know much about the real story but arranged the plot in according to Casey Affleck and Matt Damon's suggestions and ideas.

As a result, the movie seems to be shot by a bored director and lazy actors even the remarkble photography and the hopeless attempt to imitate Bela Tarr's  directing style.
